One day projects week 1 - Colour - 23/01/2023

 One day projects week 1

Daisy Jackson / 23/01/2023

For our week one one day projects launch, we focused on colour. In this mini project we were told to focus on contrasting colours while also looking at complimentary colours - telling a story and painting a picture.

We were given a sheet of paint shades used for painting. On these rectangles we had to draw colourfully. I decided to do a whole half of the sheet to challenge myself.

Here are my thumbnails for idea generation:

Here are my favourites:

I love these two due to the difference in perspective. Matt mentioned how it would be interesting to not centralise everything and focus on different angles. I think it worked really well and the colours were complimentary towards each other.

I love this one as I make use of the blue background and add white and yellow to create the illusion of the tide coming onto the beach. This is an interesting twist and plays nicely with the angles and perspective. The starfish adds a nice extra feature and makes it more interesting.

After this I started to bring the thumbnails to life.

Here are the final pieces:

Here are my favourite pieces:

For the apple illustration I love the contrast of the blue and red. The added details such as the shine on the apple really emphasises it and also works well with the shadow. I think having it central really works well for this piece and the background being a pastel blue is not too overpowering for the harshness of the shade of red for the apple.

As for the lily pad idea I also love the added details. It paints a picture and does not follow the central look I was trying to avoid. Everything seems more natural and the added white works well for the water.

I love the series for both the cherry and the worms. I played around with different angles and how close up the view was. I think even adding dirt was interesting for one of the worms as it adds a unique detail. Having the same shade but slightly different for each image really brings it together as a series and story, almost as if it is a movie and it is featuring different clips.

The same goes for this as I love the different perspectives of the snails. I feel like it is showing the audience into the lives of a small snail family and introducing each character one by one. I felt the shade of brown/creme was great for the snails as it compliments the darkness of the brown used for the shell of the snail.

I also love the button. This is an example of a centralised drawing that has worked well. I tried my best to refrain from jus focusing the illustration in the middle but I felt like for this one it worked really well. The added white and black for detail (and for shadow) really emphasised the realism and gave it a 'raw' appearance which I loved. The red contrasted really nicely to the grey as well!

I am extremely happy with the way the crab turned out. I think the red used contrasted really nicely to the blue and allowed for emphasis on the crab. The added details of white and black also add a 'raw' appearance to this piece while also making it look really fun and cute. It has a lot of personality. I also love how I used the white to represent reflection - as though the crab has just came out of the water. This tells a story to the viewer.

Overall thoughts?

I really enjoyed this task and the creative journey it allowed me to go through. I hate drawing small but this was really fun and fast paced as my mind kept thinking of more and more ideas. There are some drawings I do not like as much as others but half of these were experiments - I have tried my best to come out of my comfort zone for these. I am really happy with the risks I took and the outcomes I have created. I will take the knowledge I have learned from this one day project and use it towards my upcoming ones as I know this well help me a lot - especially for idea generation!
